Bal Folk

En 1995 alors que je suis matelot sur Solweig, un vieux gréement, en Bretagne, je découvre l’accordéon diatonique et les chants marins.

Séduit par ce petit instrument, je vais pendant trois années complètes me former à corps perdu auprès de musiciens. Norbert Pignol et Stéphane Milleret seront les piliers de cette formation, cette rencontre aura été l’un des ferments de ma passion pour la musique. Je croiserai également sur ce chemin Bruno Le Tron et Christian Oller.

Curieux et amateur d’un grand nombre de styles musicaux : jazz, musiques du monde, rock,… je découvre d’abord les répertoires « néo folk » et traditionnels connus de cet instrument puis j’expérimente très rapidement d’autres styles. La composition viendra renforcer cette envie d’explorer d’autres univers musicaux avec ce drôle d’instrument.

Obal trae su música desde las Rias Baixas en Galicia, donde nace este proyecto pensado y creado desde el baile. Desde sus comienzos en el 2014, la música folk y la danza se unen para Obal, siguiendo una corriente en auge en toda Europa el “bal-folk”.

Formado por tres músicos con una larga trayectoria en la música tradicional y folk en Galicia, en la actualidad los tres forman parte de la Orquestra Folk SonDeSeu. Son formados por reconocidos músicos del universo folk y exploran ahora ritmos de las mùsicas centroeuropeas, asì como piezas de propia composición.

Bourreé, scottish, circasian, chapeloise, muñeira, an-dro, o mazurka son sólo un ejemplo de los ritmos que forman su palestra de músicas. Mediante instrumentos como el bouzouki, la zanfona y la nickelharpa en principio tan distantes entre sí, establecen una conversación con el baile.

Blanca Altable & Chuchi² es un dúo (violín y guitarra acústica) nacido en 2009 con el propósito de reivindicar la belleza de la cultura tradicional castellana en diálogo con las nuevas corrientes folk contemporáneas.

Influenciados por el folclore peninsular, norteamericano y de la Europa occidental, interpretan creaciones propias y melodías castellanas recuperadas. Con esta nueva mirada hacia la tradición han conseguido una propuesta “original y valiente” - José Miguel López, Discópolis RN3 - que les llevó a conseguir el Premio a la Creación Musical del Instituto de la Juventud INJUVE 2010. Fueron semifinalistas del V Escenario Prau, representantes de España en el EBU Folk Festival en Croacia (Opatija, 2011), y han realizado giras por África producida por la AECID (Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional y Desarrollo), así como por Estados Unidos, Europa y por supuesto, toda la Península.

El suyo es un espectáculo que respira libertad, belleza, respeto por las raíces y es una clara apuesta por la renovación del folclore ajena a convencionalismos, reinventada.

Pablo Aguado (guitarra) y Rubén Mercado (acordeón y syntes) son dos jóvenes madrileños enamorados de la música tradicional y el baile, cuyas composiciones y estilo se ven influenciadas por diversos festivales de BalFolk y Danzas del Mundo en los que han coincidido durante toda su vida.

Hace dos años fundaron "Quercus Dúo", una agrupación que entiende el BalFolk como un maravilloso reconocimiento a esas "Raíces musicales" que tanto les ha aportado, pero también como la oportunidad perfecta de aunar diversos estilos e influencias con total libertad y admiración.

La mayoría del repertorio de Quercus Dúo está conformado por composiciones propias (siempre orientadas a bailes europeos) pero también de BalFolk tradicional y de diversas melodías de todo el mundo (también para y por el baile).

La Musgaña is a Spanish folk music ensemble, founded in 1986 by Enrique Almendros, José María Climent and Rafa Martin. The band incorporates various instruments such as the dulcimer, fiddle, hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, flutes, guitar and bass, and performs traditional music from the Iberian peninsula, mostly from the Spanish regions of Castile, Zamora, Leon, Extremadura and La Mancha. La Musgaña means "water-rat" in Spanish.

Belgium

Aérokorda is a young folk band from Belgium that plays energetic, yet sometimes restrained folk music with Celtic and Slavic influences. Pavel Souvandjiev (violin), Adriaan Van Wonterghem (Guitars) and Davy Cautaerts (Tin Whistles and Octave Mandolin) formed the band in October 2016.

Pavel is half Bulgarian and a classically trained violin player, this combination can be clearly heard in the way he plays. He has performed all over Europe with his other project, ‘Les Bottines Artistiques’, and is now ready for a new adventure with Aérokorda.
Adriaan was also classically trained as a guitar player and created his own specific style of playing that often adds a romantic touch in Aérokorda’s music. Adriaan also plays with another Belgian folk band called Boreas.
Davy has spent several years specializing in Celtic music, which he is very passionate about, and is the session leader of a weekly traditional Irish session in Ghent’s Irish pub. He also plays whistle in a Folkmetalband called Ithilien.

Laüsa [lahuzo] is a musical journey between inherited and imagined tradition; a living testimony that reminds us that the people found themselves in a new land and that their music was mixed. The instruments are traditional, the sound is from nowadays: Laüsa is inspired by Folk, Pop, Rock, flirts sometimes with Mediterranean or African colors, but remains faithful to the rhythm of the Gascogne dances. A "bal" group that belongs to the present but is anchored in the Gascogne land and belongs to the open, curious, generous and respectful world it comes from.

Folqué? Is an association, whose objective is to promote the Bal Folk, live genre of music and dance, that evolves making us part of the tradition. This motivation has made its members Francesco Palmeri and María Cubero, take forward a multitude of activities, workshops and events, giving regular classes, workshops and organizing concerts, parties and festivals for diffusion and enjoyment.

Two good friends on stage, quality guaranteed!

Violinist and pianist Wouter Vandenabeele and guitarist Jeroen Knapen, age before beauty, give the best of themselves tonight.

Wouter proposes almost superfluous. During the past ten years he has been playing Olla Vogala, the Ghent Folk Violin Project, tnaragonia, ambrozijn and many travels (Senegal, Brazil, china, Balkan…).

The same is true for Jeroen. He accompanied Wouter in projects such as the Ghent Folk Violin Project (or was it the other way around?) And made the inn unsafe until the early hours, including RedCoat, the Naomi Vercauteren Trio and Mustafa Avsar.

They bring a mix of traditional songs and own compositions, perfect for those who love folk, with a classic accent here, jazz influences and a tribute to world music.

Bélgica

Zigo is a young, original, energetic quintet from Belgium.

The meaning of the group is to make a bridge between danceable music and world-funk-fusion. Let yourself get surprised by the freshness of their sound and their groovy, hot and sexy melodies.

Almost all compositions are by Pablo Golder, who plays diatonic accordion and grow up in Italy being inspired by Riccardo Tesi. His Italian style goes perfectly together with the jazzy and warm saxophone of Ambroos De Schepper and the funky electric guitar of Florian De Schepper. On the rhythmical session Sam Van Ingelghem on the bass and Wout Van Liedekerke on the drum-percussions.

Although Zigo just exists for a couple of years, the band already performed in France (Paris), Spain (Folkarria - Madrid), Portugal (Andanças, Festival 3 temps), Italy (Turin, Rome, Milan, Padoue, Venise, Cremona, Palerme, Naples, Bari, Florence, Trieste), The Nederlands (Utrecht, Eindhoven, Celtic night - Rotterdam, Orfest), Belgium (Marsinnes, Boombal Festival, Dranouter Folk Festival, ...) and many others

Gema Rizo is a pedagogue and a specialist in traditional and medieval dance.

Her work covers an indispensable area in the world of pedagogy as in that of ethnographic and historical research. Throughout these years she has put together both disciplines during classes, conferences, exhibitions and workshops, demonstrating that the comparative coexistence among both matters is of unquestionable utility.

During her Castilian Dances workshop, different traditional Castilian culture dances will be explained, taking into account the cultural differences in the different communities of this land's geography. For a better understanding of the dance, issues such as clothes, music, instruments and traditional culture will be dealt with.

Bargainatt is a dance music group inspired by the traditional European repertoire. Their proposal is a trip in company of four young musicians from the south of France.

Having made their debut on the markets with the hat, the quartet embarks with you to the discovery of his universe. Fed by the classical formation of their strings and rich harmonies in the multiple colors and jazz influences of their accordionist.

Their compositions revise traditional melodies. Let yourself enter into a folk dance full of energy and freshness!

Zagala is a band born in Madrid in 2015, with the purpose of delving into the peninsular folklore and making it known. Voice, mandola, guitar, violin, Iberian percussions like the “pandero cuadrao” or tambourines, merge with the sounds of drums from other corners of the world.

The sound of Zagala is characterized by its vocal force, where the instruments contribute to the mestizaje, bringing together musics from different places, cultures and times.

The group's proposal consists of a selection of danceable themes: jota, charro, ajechao (first rhythm of the Peñaparda dance), seguidilla, fandanguillo, sevillanas ...
